First Draft Of Analtical Assignment
A COMPARISON OF REPRESENTATION OF WOMAN IN FRAGRANCE
ADVERTISEMENTS FROM 1942, 2013 AND 2016
As part of my Analytical assignment I have chosen to compare three
adverts that portray females and men in different ways. The three adverts are Californian Poppy (print, 1942), Equal (print, 2011) and The Girl (moving image, 2016).

war time which is shown in the advert as the male, who clearly has the upper

The representation of females is the idea of woman being much more weak
and men, as I said, having the upper hand. In the image the woman is portrayed
in the man’s arms almost ‘falling’ in to him so much that she is unable to hold
herself. The fact that the man is higher on the print may suggest being
superior to the woman. At this time females were considered less worthy than
men.
The copy reads “As haunting as a Chopin nocturne… as dangerous as a
tropical moon… as tantalizing as a yashmak… as intimate as a kiss… as deadly as
a live wire…” Music was a growing thing in the 1940s and people were listening
to it more often. The reference to Chopin’s nocturne (a musical composers work)
may have an effect on what people think about this perfume eg. Seeing an
orchestral show or having any type of musical instrument at the time was a very
upper-class thing to do. This gives the impression that the perfume maybe an
aim for a higher class type of woman. The copy also talks about “as tantalizing
as a yashmak.” A yashmak is a
veil that woman wear to cover their faces. Tantalizing means “To excite the
desires of someone but not to fill their needs. This is portraying the perfume
smell to help attract and excite someone you would want. At this time, Men
would be off to war and be travelling to places where there are sexually
pleasing girls, this perfume is giving the impression that by buying it you
have the upper hand over those girls.
